Former Georgian lawmaker and ex-president of the Wrestling Federation, Luka Kurtanidze, has been arrested following allegations of physical abuse against his former wife, Khatuna Mikadze.
Georgia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs confirmed the arrest on July 27, stating that Kurtanidze is being charged with domestic violence and violating the terms of a restraining order.
According to the ministry’s press office, domestic violence carries a penalty of up to two years in prison, or one to three years in cases of repeat offenses. Violation of a restraining order is also punishable by up to two years in prison.
Earlier today, Mikadze told media that Kurtanidze broke into her home in the Black Sea town of Kobuleti and assaulted her. She sustained multiple bodily injuries and was diagnosed with a mild concussion.
“This is not the second, third, or even fourth time,” Mikadze said. “Every time I went to the police, they would say, ‘Let’s not ruin his life because he’s Eldar [Luka] Kurtanidze. Let’s just call it psychological violence.’”
She expressed hope that this time, justice will be served: “Now that police officers witnessed the physical violence firsthand, I hope they won’t try to dismiss it as mere psychological abuse.”
Kurtanidze, once a prominent figure in both sports and politics, has faced criticism in the past for aggressive behavior but had avoided serious legal consequences until now.
