Former MP and Olympic Wrestler Kurtanidze sentenced to 7 months in prison

Batumi City Court in Georgia’s Adjara region has sentenced Luka Kurtanidze, former MP from the ruling Georgian Dream party, former president of the National Wrestling Federation and Olympic wrestler, to seven months in imprisonment.

The court found Kurtanidze guilty of domestic violence, while acquitting him on charges related to property damage and unlawful interference with property ownership.

According to the ruling, Kurtanidze’s sentence will be counted from July 27, meaning he is expected to be released in February.

The Prosecutor’s Office had charged Kurtanidze with domestic violence against a family member, intentional damage to a family member’s property and violating the requirements and obligations defined by a protective order. The charges carry a maximum penalty of up to five years in prison.
