French President Emmanuel Macron announced on social media that he had held a phone conversation with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer to discuss mounting global challenges, emphasizing the need for unity in the face of international upheaval.

The discussion followed Macron’s recent talks with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and came amid growing concerns over the US-imposed tariffs that are shaking the global economy.

“A trade war is in no one’s interest,” Macron stated. “We must stand united and resolute to protect our citizens and our businesses.”

Macron confirmed that France and the United Kingdom are committed to coordinating their positions in upcoming talks with US President Donald Trump, whose protectionist trade measures have sparked tension among transatlantic allies.

The two leaders also reviewed the situation in Ukraine, following a visit to Kyiv by the Chiefs of Defence Staff of both countries. Macron reiterated support for Ukraine through the Coalition of the Willing, which is exploring long-term assistance for the Ukrainian military and the possibility of deploying a “reassurance force” behind the contact line to deter future Russian aggression.

In addition to trade and defense matters, Macron and Starmer discussed key bilateral and European issues. “In an unstable world, strong alliances remain our best compass,” Macron concluded.
