Leader of Hungary’s ruling TISZA party and incoming prime minister, Péter Magyar, has stated that his government would engage in talks with Russia if required, but ruled out any prospect of closer ties.
Speaking to journalists, Magyar dismissed comments by Viktor Orbán regarding a “pro-Ukrainian government,” stressing that Hungary’s priority is its own national interests.
“No one wants a pro-Ukrainian government, everyone wants a pro-Hungarian government,” he said.
In an interview with a Hungarian newspaper a day before the elections, Magyar also addressed Hungary’s energy dependence on Russia, noting that dialogue with Moscow could be unavoidable under certain circumstances.
“If circumstances require it, we will have to sit down at the negotiating table with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Neither Russia’s nor Hungary’s geographical position will change. Our energy dependence will remain for some time. Diversification must increase, but it cannot happen overnight. If necessary, we will negotiate, but we will not become friends,” Magyar stated.
He added that the new government will focus on addressing the real problems of Hungarian citizens rather than engaging in foreign policy “games.”
