Georgian, Indian FMs discuss ‘growing dynamics’ of bilateral cooperation, prospects for free trade

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia, Maka Botchorishvili, has met with her Indian counterpart, Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, during her visit to New Delhi, discussing ways to enhance cooperation between the two countries.

The discussions focused on the “growing dynamics” of bilateral relations and efforts to maximise the potential for collaboration, the Georgian Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday.

Both ministers highlighted the significance of high-level political dialogue and agreed on the need to boost diplomatic engagement through political consultations and economic commissions.

Trade and economic ties featured prominently in the talks, with an emphasis on fostering closer business relations and expanding cooperation in education, tourism, and people-to-people exchanges. The increase in direct flights operated by the Indian airline IndiGo was welcomed as a positive development in strengthening links between the nations, the Ministry said.

An important point of discussion was the possibility of negotiating a free trade agreement, which both sides see as a step towards deepening economic cooperation, the body added.

Botchorishvili also welcomed India’s decision to open a resident embassy in Tbilisi, anticipating that the arrival of the first Indian Ambassador would further bolster bilateral relations.

At the conclusion of the meeting, both ministers reaffirmed their commitment to continued cooperation and advancing the strategic partnership between Georgia and India.
