Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Michael McCaul, has praised the US decision to impose sanctions on Bidzina Ivanishvili, the founder and honorary chairman of Georgia’s ruling Georgian Dream party. In a statement, McCaul emphasized the significance of holding Ivanishvili and his party accountable for undermining Georgia’s democratic trajectory.
“I welcome these long-overdue sanctions on Georgian Dream’s puppet master, Bidzina Ivanishvili. He and his party must be held accountable for dragging Georgia down a path towards autocracy and away from the transatlantic future that the Georgian people want and deserve,” McCaul stated.
The sanctions, announced by the US Treasury Department, freeze Ivanishvili’s assets under US jurisdiction and prohibit financial interactions with him by American citizens and entities. This move reflects Washington’s growing concern over Georgia’s democratic backsliding and perceived alignment with Kremlin interests under Ivanishvili’s influence.
