Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Rep. Michael McCaul (R-TX), has called for “expanded, meaningful sanctions” on senior Georgian officials, including Bidzina Ivanishvili, whom he described as the “corrupt puppet-master” of Georgia’s government.
In a statement shared by the committee’s official account, McCaul urged the Biden-Harris administration to take immediate action, stating that such sanctions are “long overdue.” He emphasized the need to hold these actors accountable for their “oppression of the Georgian people” and their “refusal to observe their rights and wishes.”
The call comes amid heightened international scrutiny of Georgia’s political climate, with growing concerns about democratic backsliding, suppression of opposition voices, and violations of civil liberties.
