Malkhaz Dolidze, head of the Georgian Bread Manufacturers Union, on Tuesday claimed that the recent increase in electricity tariffs will not affect the cost of bread.

He explained that most bread in Georgia is baked using natural gas rather than electricity.

“Electricity is not that significant for bread production. Of course, every tetri counts, but our ovens primarily run on natural gas. Electricity is mainly used for lighting and ventilation, which is minimal in winter. For ovens, it’s more efficient to work with heat,” Dolidze said.

He added that popular bread varieties will see no price change. “Wheat prices fluctuate a lot. Last year we imported from Kazakhstan when Russia was unavailable; now there is plenty of wheat. That’s the situation affecting bread. I cannot speak for other products,” he said.
