Georgia’s State Security Service (SSS) has accused opposition groups of considering plans to provoke unrest ahead of the 4 October local elections and planned protests.
Speaking on Imedi Live, SSS head Mamuka Mdinaradze said intelligence suggested that “several internal groups” were seriously discussing actions designed to spark public anger.
“They need to plan something that will trigger strong emotions among people. I strongly advise against not only doing this but even thinking about it, because the state’s response will be very tough,” Mdinaradze said.
He added that while peaceful protest was permitted, any attempt to step outside the law would be met with “serious consequences.”
“The elections will be held with dignity, we will face the challenges, and the Georgian state - already strong - will become even stronger,” he said.
