Mamuka Mdinaradze, Executive Secretary of the ruling Georgian Dream party and leader of the parliamentary majority, sharply criticized the opposition's rhetoric regarding a potential "peaceful overthrow" of the government.
Responding to questions about the opposition's future plans, Mdinaradze said the phrase "peaceful overthrow" is contradictory and misleading.
"There’s no such thing as a 'peaceful overthrow' — it's as absurd as talking about a 'peaceful murder' or the 'peaceful extermination' of people. These phrases don’t insure anyone from legal consequences," he stated.
According to Mdinaradze, the opposition is either intellectually incapable of understanding the true meaning of the word "overthrow," or they are attempting a naive form of self-protection by adding the word "peaceful" to avoid criminal liability.
"The term 'overthrow' implies force or illegality. If someone is calling for an overthrow, they shouldn't hide behind the word 'peaceful.' If they want to attempt a coup, let them try and face the consequences," he said.
Mdinaradze emphasized that using "peaceful" as a prefix does not shield individuals from prosecution under criminal law, as calls for the violent or illegal removal of government remain a serious offense.
