Mamuka Mdinaradze, the Executive Secretary of the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Sunday said the recent meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin “answered all questions” about Georgia’s role in the Ukraine conflict.
Speaking on social media, Mdinaradze highlighted the main message from the two nuclear powers: “In search of peace.” He argued that from the very start of the war in Ukraine, Georgia had been placed in a dilemma between war and peace by “informal, shadow forces” operating through bureaucrats, with radical opposition, certain media outlets, and NGOs attempting to present the situation as a “false dilemma” to Georgian society.
Mdinaradze outlined four key points drawn from the Trump-Putin meeting: the conflict was indeed a proxy war, a confrontation between the West and Russia carried out through a third country, confirmed by Trump himself; Georgia was not merely involved but used as a second proxy state, with the country’s resilience preventing it from being left in ruins; the war could have been avoided, as leaders on both sides reportedly agree that if Trump had been in office, the conflict might not have occurred; and the war-and-peace dilemma was real, with the Georgian Government, “backed by public support”, making an “irreplaceable decision” to protect the country and “tens of thousands of lives”, paying a “heavy political price”.
He also criticised political actors and groups who, he said, tried to drag Georgia into the conflict, orchestrated revolutionary plans during the war, or supported former President Mikheil Saakashvili’s attempted return to power.
“All of these agents [...] must answer to the Georgian people”, he said.
Mdinaradze urged any remaining supporters of these forces to reconsider their position, asking how they could still back individuals whose victory might have left them dead.
