Estonian Foreign Minister welcomes US and UK sanctions on Georgian officials, urges EU action

Margus Tsahkna, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Estonia, has expressed strong support for the sanctions imposed by the United States and the United Kingdom on senior Georgian government officials accused of serious human rights violations.

In a statement shared on X, Tsahkna applauded the coordinated measures taken by the US and UK, emphasizing the importance of accountability for those responsible for undermining democracy in Georgia.

“I welcome that the US & UK imposed sanctions on Georgian government officials for serious human rights abuses,” Tsahkna wrote. “I do hope that the EU will take concrete steps to hold accountable those who are undermining democracy in Georgia.”

The Estonian Foreign Minister reaffirmed Estonia’s solidarity with the people of Georgia, who have been voicing concerns over democratic backsliding and seeking closer ties with the European Union.

The sanctions, announced earlier today, include travel bans and asset freezes targeting five high-ranking Georgian officials, including the Minister and Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs. These measures were implemented in response to their roles in violent attacks on journalists and peaceful protesters.
