Georgian Dream MP Mariam Lashkhi on Sunday accused German Ambassador Peter Fischer of breaching diplomatic ethics and European values through what she described as interference in Georgia’s internal affairs and open support for violent protesters.
Lashkhi added Fischer’s recent actions constituted a violation of the Vienna Convention, the very principles under which diplomats are appointed to foreign countries.
“Fischer has trampled on every ethical standard. By interfering in Georgia’s domestic matters and blatantly supporting violent individuals, he is violating European values,” Lashkhi said.
She added that even members of the European Parliament had begun assessing the Ambassador’s behaviour critically, calling it “a proper and necessary reaction.”
“When a diplomat engages in such activities, he steps beyond the boundaries of diplomatic conduct. It is important that our country responds to prevent further damage to relations between Georgia and the European Union and to ensure that the EU’s own values are not disregarded by its representatives,” Lashkhi stated.
Germany’s Foreign Ministry earlier announced that Fischer had been recalled from Tbilisi for consultations.
