MEP Cramon on EP resolution on Georgia: still time before EU summit to improve things

MEP Viola von Cramon, who has been critical to Georgian authorities for several years on, has responded to the European Parliament resolution over media freedom and safety of journalists in Georgia and said that there was still some time for the country to improve things before the EU summit which will decide on Georgia’s EU candidate status. 

“We adopted a landmark resolution on Georgia. There still is some time before the EU summit for Georgian politicians to start improving things. Stop polarizing language, rejoin the April 19 agreement, start fixing the judiciary, stop Russian disinformation,” Cramon tweeted on Thursday. 

The European Parliament adopted a joint resolution initiated by five political groups of the European Parliament on violations of media freedom and the safety of journalists in Georgia on Wednesday. 

The resolution was supported by 308 MEPs, while 218 opposed it.

The resolution constrained concerns over media freedom in Georgia and security of journalists, also included calls to impose sanctions on the founder of the ruling Georgian Dream (GD) party Bidzina Ivanishvili for his “destructive role and influence on the government decisions.” 

The GD authorities stated that the EP “has become the victim of fake information,” noting that the resolution carried no serious importance. 

Georgia applied for EU membership back on March 3 of this year and is now awaiting the bloc’s decision on the candidate status along with Ukraine and Moldova.
