Lithuanian MEP Rasa Jukneviciene has called on the Georgian opposition to merge their forces, like in Slovakia years ago, and fight against the authorities.
Speaking with the opposition-minded Mtavari channel on Monday, the MEP suggested that high polarisation on the Georgian political agenda hampered the country’s Euro-Atlantic integration.
She brought an example of Slovakia when the “people and the opposition united to fight against the authorities.”
“Sometimes, the opposition should play a more important role than the government. To go back, Brazauskas was the president of Lithuania back in 1993 and he was doing everything to integrate the country into Eurppe.
“At the beginning of our independence we managed to unite. We also sometimes mention the example of Slovakia, where the population took the management of the process into their own hands, and we think that the opposition parties [in Georgia ] should also unite like in Slovakia and fight together [against the authorities],” Jukneviciene: said.
Georgia has a six-month term to fulfil the conditions of the European Commission to receive EU membership candidate status by the end of this year.
