MEP Miriam Lexmann from the European People’s Party has responded to the recent statement of the European Council chair Charles Michel on Georgia’s EU prospects and stated that “It is now time for the Georgian government to deliver instead of making poor excuses.
Michel said on July 6 that the European Council was ready to grant Georgia candidate status as soon as the country met the priorities set by the European Commission.
The Georgian Dream ruling party claimed that it was ready to fulfill the criteria and presented its strategy earlier this month.
However, the GD said that meeting the first recommendation, which concerned easing depolarization in the country, was unlikely without the opposition’s moves.
The opposition responded that addressing the priorities, which were about de-oligarchization, court and electoral reforms and others, would easy polarization, noting that the GD’s promise on addressing the issues was a “lie.”
