Michael Roth, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the German Bundestag, expressed strong criticism regarding Mikheil Kavelashvili’s election as President of Georgia.

In a statement shared on X, Roth labeled the election process as another step toward the “Gleichschaltung” — a term historically associated with the alignment of institutions under authoritarian rule. Roth accused Georgia’s ruling party of deepening societal divisions, planning a coup, and undermining liberal democracy in the country.

“The ‘election’ of Mikheil Kavelashvili as the new President of Georgia is another step towards the ‘Gleichschaltung’ of all constitutional institutions in Georgia. The ruling party deepens the division of Georgia, plans a coup and wants to destroy the liberal democracy,” Roth wrote.
