Employees of the Migration Department of Georgia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs have detained 26 foreign nationals during special immigration control operations conducted in the capital city of Tbilisi and the Black Sea resort city of Batumi as part of efforts to combat illegal migration.

The Ministry said the detainees are citizens of India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Turkmenistan, Turkey, Iran, Sudan, Jordan, Kuwait, Nepal and Ethiopia.

The body added officers inspected specific locations to identify foreign nationals residing in Georgia without legal grounds. The checks established that the individuals had violated the requirements set out under the Georgian law on the legal status of foreigners and stateless persons.

Those detained have been transferred to the Migration Department’s temporary accommodation centre. Relevant procedures are underway to carry out their expulsion from the country, the Ministry added.
