Michael Roth, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the German Bundestag, has called on the European Union to step up its efforts to protect democracy and security in Georgia.
Taking to X, Roth criticized the EU’s hesitancy and highlighted the decisive actions taken by the United States:
“When will we FINALLY take more responsibility for peace and security on our own continent? While the EU and its member states hesitate and talk, the USA is taking action against the attack on freedom and democracy in Georgia! Thank you, US! Georgian freedom fighters need us now!”
Roth’s remarks come as the US imposed sanctions on Bidzina Ivanishvili, the founder of Georgia’s ruling party, Georgian Dream, for undermining democratic institutions and aligning with Russian interests.
