President Mikheil Kavelashvili has described the restoration of the autocephaly of the Georgian Orthodox Church as an event of both practical and “profound symbolic importance”, saying it helped unite the nation.
In a social media statement marking the anniversary on Wednesday, Kavelashvili said 25 March represented a “special day” in Georgia’s history, when the church regained its independence in 1917.
He said the restoration of autocephaly “reunited the nation and the clergy”, underlining the importance of faith, traditions and spiritual values in Georgian society.
The president also noted that this year’s commemoration came without Ilia II, describing it as particularly painful following the death of the long-serving patriarch.
Kavelashvili wished citizens peace, unity and spiritual strength, calling on the country to remain resilient during what he described as a difficult period.
