Georgian President Mikheil Kavelashvili on Wednesday claimed that certain opposition politicians and experts were so entrenched in their positions that they would be willing to “sacrifice Georgia” for Russia’s defeat in the war in Ukraine.

Speaking on Post Analytics, Kavelashvili recalled US President Donald Trump stating that “if he had been in office, the war would not have happened and allowing it to happen was a crime”.

Kavelashvili said Georgia’s approach following the outbreak of the Russia–Ukraine war has been proven correct and is now reflected in the US National Security Strategy.

“Our stance at the time, the position we stood firm on, was the only right decision and today we see the results. Everyone is now gravitating toward that position, distancing themselves from European bureaucracy and from the war narrative. Every country that wants to avoid being dragged into conflict is moving toward the stance Georgia adopted and maintained,” he said.

Kavelashvili argued that the priorities highlighted in the US strategy - values, national interests, economic security - mirror the policy Georgia has pursued in recent years, especially since the war began.

He went on to criticise some domestic political actors, claiming they long for Georgia to be in a situation similar to Ukraine’s.

“Some people, who call themselves politicians and experts, are in such a closed loop that, in their view, they would even sacrifice Georgia just so Russia would be defeated. They mourn the fact that we are not in Ukraine’s situation today. They would outright sacrifice Georgia and call it a victory,” Kavelashvili said.
