Georgia’s President Mikheil Kavelashvili has extended his congratulations to the country’s Muslim community on the occasions of Eid al-Fitr and Nowruz.
In a statement on Tuesday, Kavelashvili said he was offering his greetings “belatedly” and thanked Muslim citizens for their solidarity following the death of Ilia II.
He expressed particular gratitude for what he described as their support for grieving Orthodox Christians, noting that members of the Muslim community had chosen to refrain from holding celebratory events during a period of national mourning.
“Your decision to share our grief in these difficult moments and to refrain from marking Nowruz and Eid celebrations is a clear demonstration of the brotherhood, friendship and mutual respect on which relations between our Christian and Muslim citizens are based,” the statement said.
The president wished the Muslim community peace, happiness and prosperity, and thanked them for what he called a “worthy example of solidarity” shown in recent days.
