President Mikheil Kavelashvili, accompanied by his spouse and an official delegation, met Georgian figure skaters who will represent the country at the 25th Winter Olympic Games and wished them success in the upcoming competition.
Kavelashvili thanked the athletes for their recent achievements at the European Championships, saying their performance brought pride and joy to the nation.
“As a former athlete, I understand your emotions, your thoughts, and the level of preparation and concentration required for competition. On behalf of our people, I want to express gratitude for the joy we experienced during the European Championships. This is just the beginning — you have done tremendous work. Georgians love sport, and victory means a lot to them. It is a great honour for you to have brought such happiness to our nation,” the President said.
Kavelashvili added that the athletes’ success serves as an important example and motivation for young people.
“I am sure many children, girls and boys, will start figure skating. Success is contagious. It is not only about becoming champions; it also lays the foundation for future generations to see this achievement and develop a desire to take up sport. You are role models for them,” he said.
The President stressed that the entire country stands behind the athletes and expressed confidence in their professionalism and performance.
Georgia will be represented by eight athletes in two sports at the Winter Olympics — figure skating and alpine skiing. Members of the Georgian alpine skiing team are currently in Cortina ski resort in northern Italy, where they will compete in slalom and giant slalom events.
As part of the visit, Kavelashvili will attend the figure skating team event to support Georgian competitors. Before the Olympic opening ceremony, he is also scheduled to attend a dinner hosted by Italian President Sergio Mattarella for visiting heads of state, as well as a reception hosted by International Olympic Committee President Kirsty Coventry.
