Georgian President Mikheil Kavlashvili on Thursday paid tribute to the victims of the 1989 April 9 tragedy by laying flowers at the memorial in the capital city of Tbilisi.

The presidential press service said Kavlashvili was joined at the memorial by the Prime Minister, Irakli Kobakhidze, Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili and other representatives of the executive and legislative branches.

This year marks the 37th anniversary of the tragedy, when Soviet troops violently dispersed peaceful demonstrators in Tbilisi demanding Georgia’s independence, resulting in multiple deaths and injuries.
