An extraordinary session of the Georgian Parliament has been convened by President Mikheil Kavelashvili, with key items on the agenda including controversial changes to drug policy and a possible vote on terminating the parliamentary mandates of members of ex-PM Giorgi Gakharia’s party.
The For Georgia party are facing termination of their parliamentary mandates after missing more than half of plenary sessions and never formally resigning.
Gakharia’s party - holding 12 seats post 2024 election - has consistently boycotted sessions, yet never officially renounced the seats.
In February, mandates of 49 MPs from three other opposition coalitions were revoked when they themselves petitioned for termination, citing the electoral results’ illegitimacy. For Georgia did not follow suit.
