Georgia’s arrested third president, Mikheil Saakashvili, on Wednesday said the United States needed new military bases in Greenland to help defend the free world and expressed confidence that an agreement on this issue would be reached.

In a post on social media, Saakashvili wrote that he had visited a US military base in Greenland in the past, stopping there while traveling to the White House on an official visit. He recalled that local residents recognized him and came to take photos.

Saakashvili also noted that he had been to US military bases in Helmand province in Afghanistan and at Incirlik Air Base in Turkey. Comparing them, he said the base in Greenland was “very small” relative to others.

“Therefore, the United States truly needs new bases on the island to defend the free world,” Saakashvili wrote, adding that any such move should be carried out with the consent of Denmark and Greenland and in full compliance with international law.
