Ex-Pres Saakashvili accuses Gov’t of ‘stealing’ Rike theatre from Georgian people

Former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili has condemned the planned demolition of the Rike theatre complex, accusing the authorities of taking public property away from the Georgian people.

Speaking during a court hearing on Thursday, Saakashvili claimed the government was fulfilling a long-held ambition to demolish the landmark building.

“Don't you understand that the Rike theatre built in Georgia belonged to you? They are taking it away from you,” he said.

Saakashvili described the complex, designed by Italian architect Massimiliano Fuksas, as “a brilliant creation” and claimed it had been recognised as one of the world's best architectural projects.

He alleged that the demolition reflected what he called the authorities' belief that they faced no public resistance and accused the government of seeking to consolidate its power.

Preparations for the demolition of the Rike theatre complex have already begun, with the work scheduled to be completed by 25 December.
