Georgia's imprisoned former President Mikheil Saakashvili has accused the authorities of deliberately delaying medical treatment for opposition politician Elene Khoshtaria, comparing her situation to his own experience while in custody.
In a social media post onWednesday, Saakashvili alleged that doctors gave conflicting accounts about patients' conditions and claimed officials sought to downplay serious medical issues.
"What they are doing to Elene now is painfully familiar to me - delaying hospitalisation, doctors telling you one thing in person and then saying something entirely different to the media, avoiding a proper diagnosis, and openly mocking you while insisting there is nothing wrong. At the same time, as in my case, they prepare society for your possible death in hospital. This is all part of a 'zero empathy' approach," Saakashvili wrote.

"We should ask ourselves every day: 'What pain did we inflict on the dictatorship today?' We must constantly respond with pressure. In the end, it will collapse from a thousand wounds inflicted upon it," he said.
Saakashvili added that, despite continued pressure, the opposition must "stand up and respond" in order to prevent what he described as an "inevitable catastrophe" for the country.
