Georgian Health Minister Mikheil Sarjveladze visited the Neuromuscular Diseases Referral Centre at the Geneva University Hospitals during his working visit to Geneva, where he met with internationally qualified neuropediatrician Dr. Joël Fluss, the head of the centre.
The Ministry’s press office said the meeting focused on the management of rare neuromuscular diseases, including Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Discussions also covered rehabilitation and the management of side effects, while participants noted that many innovative therapies had not yet been fully tested worldwide or across Europe.
The head of the referral centre stated that the treatment protocol for patients diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy in Switzerland involves the same medications currently used in Georgia.
Sarjveladze said the Ministry was actively studying international practices, the approaches of regulatory bodies and the conclusions of international experts to assess the medical situation, safety risks and long-term outcomes in this field.
Sarjveladze was in Geneva as part of a working visit during the 79th session of the World Health Assembly, where he also held bilateral meetings with healthcare officials from several European countries.
