The United States has officially suspended its strategic partnership with Georgia, as confirmed by US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller. This decision comes amid growing unrest in Georgia, where protests have erupted over the government’s actions, including the suspension of the European integration process.
In his statement, Miller stressed that the US together with the EU regrets ruling Georgian Dream’s decision to suspend EU accession, highlighted that the Georgian people “overwhelmingly support integration with Europe” and expressed concern over the excessive use of force by Georgian police against protesters.
“The United States condemns the excessive use of force by police against Georgians seeking to exercise their rights to assembly and expression, including their freedom to peacefully protest,” Miller added.
