Metropolitan Epiphanius of Kyiv and All Ukraine has expressed deep sorrow over the death of His Holiness, Catholicos-Patriarch Ilia II of Georgia, offering condolences to the Georgian Orthodox Church and the people of Georgia.
The top cleric described Patriarch Ilia II as “a spiritual leader who dedicated his life to God, the Church, and the Georgian people.” He noted that over decades of service, the Patriarch remained a spiritual guide for many believers, working to strengthen faith, preserve Christian traditions, and support the spiritual renewal of society following years of state-imposed atheism.
Metropolitan Epiphanius also highlighted Patriarch Ilia II’s support for Ukraine in the aftermath of Russia’s full-scale invasion.
“His office held special significance not only for Georgia but for the wider Orthodox world. It inspired many, helping them overcome trials and maintain hope even in the most difficult times, particularly during wars provoked by Russian aggressors,” the statement said.
He offered heartfelt condolences to the bishops, clergy, and faithful of the Georgian Orthodox Church, as well as to the people of Georgia, for whom Patriarch Ilia II was not only a church leader but a true spiritual father.
“We pray that the Lord receive His Holiness into His heavenly dwelling, grant peace to his soul, and comfort all who mourn his loss. Eternal and bright memory to him,” Metropolitan Epiphanius added.
Patriarch Ilia II, who led the Georgian Orthodox Church for decades, passed away at the age of 93.
