Moldovan President Maia Sandu on Friday signed a decree to commence negotiations on Moldova’s accession to the European Union.

In a statement posted on social network X, Sandu expressed her optimism about the development, saying “this marks our pathway to peace, prosperity, and an enhanced quality of life for all our citizens. I wish our delegation success in these crucial negotiations.”

Negotiations for Moldova’s EU accession, alongside Ukraine, are scheduled to commence on June 25, as reported by Radio Liberty.

The European Commission recently affirmed the progress made by both Moldova and Ukraine in implementing European integration reforms. Despite the initiation of negotiations, it is important to note that EU accession is a complex process that does not guarantee immediate membership.

Currently, the European Union consists of 27 member states. Nine countries, including Georgia, hold EU candidate status and are navigating their own stages of accession negotiations.
