2,163 Georgian citizens have requested asylum in Germany between January and August 2021, while the figure stood at 1,811 in the same period of the last year.

Despite Georgian applicants amounting to only five percent of total 108,375 requests in the reported period, Georgia is in the top 10 countries for asylum seekers, Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) says.

The EU Observer published an article yesterday which said that unlawful residency and unfounded asylum claims from some western Balkan states, plus Moldova, Georgia and Ukraine, is triggering discussions on suspending visa-free travel to the EU.

The Georgian opposition parties said that due to the politics of the Georgian Dream government the country may lose visa free travel opportunities with the EU it gained back in 2017.

The Georgian Foreign Ministry claims that the visa waiver ‘is not at any risk’ and ‘it is worrying the opposition is happy with such a possibility.’
