More than 130 former officials call for Saakashvili’s abroad treatment

More than 130 foreign officials on Friday released a joint statement in which they called for the transportation of currently imprisoned former president Mikheil Saakashvili abroad for treatment, saying his death in prison would lead to “fatal consequences” for the country.   

 

“The evaluations of both the consilium created by the Public Defender of Georgia and the independent group of American medical experts unmistakably confirm that the life of Saakashvili will not be saved in Georgia and the process will end with death by torture”,said the former officials. 

Refraining from discussing the charges against the former top official, the politicians said “inhumane and degrading treatment” was prohibited by the country’s constitution. 

 

“The death of Saakashvili by torture in Georgia will have extremely harmful internal and external political consequences. The fatal outcome will not only deepen the current polarization in the country, but also destroy any chance of overcoming it in the near future”, they said.  

 

“And finally, a historical process is taking place in Europe today – the heroic struggle of the Ukrainian people before the Russian aggression. What will be the historical verdict against us, if the Georgian state, in these historical days, kills Saakashvili, Putin’s ‘personal enemy’, by torture in prison?”, asked the former officials.  

The current Georgian Dream authorities claim Saakashvili is deliberately harming his health to escape justice.
