The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has denied claims that Dmitry Trofimov, head of the Russian interests section at the Swiss Embassy in Tbilisi, has been recalled due to controversy. Moscow clarified last week that Trofimov’s departure was part of a planned personnel rotation, dismissing the circulating rumors that his actions regarding financial support for performances by anti-Russian artists led to the decision.
Earlier this week, a YouTube video claimed that Moscow was displeased with Trofimov for allocating funds to purchase tickets for performances by artists and directors who have publicly criticized Russia, its leadership, and President Vladimir Putin’s role in the ongoing war in Ukraine. The video suggested that this financial support angered Russian officials, particularly those concerned with the diplomat’s apparent backing of individuals who insult the Russian government.
In response, the Russian Foreign Ministry released a statement via its Telegram channel, describing the claims as a “pseudo-sensation” intended to mislead the public, especially those “unfamiliar with diplomatic practices”. The statement stressed that Trofimov’s tenure in Tbilisi had been productive, with his efforts contributing to the normalization of Russian-Georgian relations, including the restoration of direct air traffic between the two countries.
The Ministry also pointed out that the recent progress in ties between Russia and Georgia had unsettled some groups who seek to create discord between the nations. Moscow urged people to disregard speculation and manipulative narratives, emphasizing the importance of relying on official information rather than unverified sources.
