Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili on Friday responded to Russia’s plans to deploy a new naval military base in the city of Ochamchire, in Georgia’s currently occupied Abkhazia region, and said the move could threaten the whole Black Sea security.

“This is a big minefield for the security of the Black Sea, the planned [deep-sea] port in the city of Anaklia [near Abkhazia], and the country’s European integration. With this step, Russia is trying to strengthen its influence in the Black Sea region and dominate the region”, Zourabichvili said.

Aslan Bzhania, the de facto President of occupied Abkhazia, this week claimed he had signed a deal with Moscow and the naval base would be deployed in the “near future”.

Tbilisi has condemned Mowcow’s alleged plans and said they represented the continuation of Russia’s intentions to annex the Georgian regions.
