Giuli Alasania, mother of imprisoned former president Mikheil Saakashvili, on Tuesday claimed her son “still had blackout episode” last night, noting the former official’s condition was “critical”.

“He lost consciousness at night. When I came, there were neurologists and others medical workers. As he [Saakashvili] told me, he had received injuries during the fall down. We talked for a while, he has a terrible color and the temperature is very high, it was up to 39”, Alasania said.

She noted a trial hearing on the relase of his son on medical grounds or the postponment of the rest of his six-year-sentence for abuse of power was sheduled on Wednesday, stressing “I do not know whether my son will live until the trials are complete”.

In his comments, the clinical director of Vivamedi civilian clinic, where Saakashvili was placed last year for treatement, dimissed previous claims by Saakashvili and his lawyers that the former had suffered blackout episodes.

Saakashvili, who currently holds Ukrainian citizenship, was arrested in Tbilisi in October 2021, after eight years in self-imposed political exile.

The current Georgian Dream authorities claim the former official is engaged in “self-harm” to escape justice.
