Giorgi Mumladze, one of the leaders of Movement for Georgia, announced on Friday that he wanted to become a new head of the largest opposition group, the United National Movement party, following the demands of several members of the party for leadership elections, with the party head Nika Melia responding he was “ready”.
“My goal is to remove the current incompetent chairman Melia and the inactive management of the party from the management”, Mumladze said
“I invite Melia to public debates of any format and I am ready to explain to the supporters of the UNM in an argumentative manner why he should no longer be the chairman [of the UNM] and how great opportunities real changes can bring to this party”, he added.
A week ago Mumladze accused Melia of violence.
Responding to the proposal, the UNM MP Roman Gotsiridze wrote on social media “this man is running for the party head? Is it a joke?”
He said that the UNM must see “democratic elections” and all leading posts “must be occupied by worthy candidates”.
