National Environment Agency suspends permit for Batumi Artificial Island Project due to safety concerns

The National Environment Agency of Georgia has suspended the permit process for constructing an artificial island in Batumi, in the country’s west.

The decision, made on August 2, followed concerns raised by Terminal 1, the company managing the Batumi oil terminal.

A preliminary study commissioned by Terminal 1 and an accompanying letter from the terminal’s director highlighted potential risks, including interference with ship entry and maneuvering, as the proposed island would be located near the terminal’s operational area.

The study also warned of possible damage to the terminal’s future development plans due to the proximity of the island.

The agency has informed Ambassador Batumi Island LLC that it would not proceed with the permit until further detailed information was provided.
