17 years have passed since the death of Georgian National Hero, Corporal Zaza Damenia, who participated in the wars in Abkhazia and Tskhinvali. Today, the national hero was once again remembered by his comrades and family members, the grave was laid with a wreath and his memory was honored.

 

 Zaza Damenia has been serving in the Georgian Armed Forces since 1992. In 1993 he fought in Abkhazia. In 2002, Zaza Damenia continued his military service in the ranks of the 11th Mechanized Brigade Light Infantry Battalion “Commando”.

 

In August 2004, with the start of hostilities in the Tskhinvali region, a commando battalion was sent to the conflict zone to protect Georgian villages. During the armed confrontation with the enemy, the Georgian side lost 16 fighters, among whom was Zaza Damenia.

 

On August 16, 2004, Zaza Damenia, at the cost of his own life, saved his comrades from death. The corporal covered with with his body a grenade that had fallen into the trench and saved his comrades from imminent death. 

 

Two days before his death, Damenia was sighted by a shell blast, but Corporal refused to leave his position and remained on the battlefield until the end. 

 

On August 24, 2004, Zaza Damenia was awarded the title of National Hero of Georgia for his outstanding bravery in the fight for the protection and unity of the homeland.
