NATO has heightened security measures at its air base in Geilenkirchen, western Germany, near the Dutch border, following a “potential threat.” The Alliance’s Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) announced on Friday that non-essential personnel had been sent home.

According to AWACS, the increased security at the Geilenkirchen base is a precautionary measure based on intelligence suggesting a potential threat.

The Geilenkirchen base houses NATO AWACS aircraft.

Last week, a German military base near Cologne was also locked down due to concerns of “suspected invasion and sabotage.”
