Irakli Kobakhidze, the head of the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Wednesday claimed NATO had maintained status quo on the issues of both Georgia and Ukraine, which he said was part of the alliance’s “pragmatic policy”.
Speaking with the Georgian Public Broadcaster, the official claimed there was “no significant difference in quality” between the notes on Georgia and Ukraine in the NATO’s Vilnius Summit communique, which had removed a MAP stage for Kyiv unlike Georgia.
“Quantitatively, the text is more about Ukraine, but qualitatively, in fact, there is no difference. The status quo was maintained, which is, one might say, the result of a pragmatic policy towards Russia”, Kobakhidze said, adding Ukraine would need the consent of all NATO members for membership and meeting conditions, which he said was “abstract”.
“Even today, no one knows when and how Ukraine will become a member of NATO. The situation is similar with Georgia,” he said, noting the situation was sparking risks.
