The message of the NATO summit in Vilnius is very clear, the door is wide open for Georgia and Ukraine, US Ambassador to Georgia Kelly Degnan said on Thursday, adding “we just need to see the political will on the part of the Georgian government to implement the necessary reforms”.

“What has not changed is that the Allies want Georgia to become a member of NATO. The steps Georgia needs to take to get into that door have been clear for some time. It’s up to Georgia to make the necessary reforms, which is crucial”, Degnan said.

She stressed those were justice reforms, strengthening of democratic institutions “so that Georgia has both military capabilities and political democratic stability and institutions to sit at the NATO table”.

The Vilnius Summit on July 11-12 reaffirmed the decision of 2008 Bucharest Summit that Georgia would be accepted into the bloc after receiving its membership action plan, while Ukraine would not need the MAP.
