President Karol Nawrocki has said Poland should consider developing its own nuclear weapons, citing the country’s security situation and its proximity to potential armed conflict.

In an interview with Polsat News, Nawrocki stated such a course should be pursued in full compliance with international law.

“This is a path that, with full respect for international standards, we must consider. We need to act in this direction in order to begin the necessary work. We are a country on the brink of armed conflict. Russia’s aggressive and imperial stance towards Poland is clear,” the President said.

Nawrocki added that although it is uncertain whether such a programme will ultimately be implemented, he supports strengthening Poland’s security framework “even on the basis of nuclear capability”.

Responding to a question about how Moscow might react to the launch of a Polish nuclear programme, the President said that Russia “can respond aggressively to anything”.
