New electricity supply restrictions in Georgia’s Russian-occupied Abkhazia

The residents of Georgia’s Russian-occupied region of Abkhazia will face new electricity restrictions with daily power outages of up to six hours starting from Thursday.

This move has been announced by the Chernomorenergo company, which manages the power supply in the region, and is aimed at optimizing energy usage due to ongoing challenges with the electricity supply.

Since December 11, 2024, electricity supply to the region has been reduced to less than three hours a day. On December 23, Russia began providing “humanitarian supplies of electricity” to Abkhazia to “help mitigate the power shortage”.

Chernomorenergo claimed the measures were necessary to ensure the stability of the energy system and make more efficient use of the available resources.
