Georgian parliamentary delegation visits site for future cultural center in Jordan

Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee Nikoloz Samkharadze, along with members of the committee’s delegation, visited the land plot near the site of Jesus Christ’s baptism in Jordan, which was granted to Georgia by the Jordanian authorities for the construction of a Georgian cultural center. The information was released by the Parliament’s press service.

“During the visit, we held discussions with the Jordanian authorities to seek their maximum support and assistance in facilitating the construction of the Georgian Cultural Center,” said Samkharadze.

The delegation also visited ongoing archaeological excavations at the site of the 11th-century Georgian monastery in Shihani, Jordan, and spoke with the head of the local archaeological service about future plans and ongoing work.

“Historically, it is confirmed that the Shihani Monastery is one of the monasteries founded by Georgians in the Holy Land. It is important to continue the archaeological excavations to preserve the Georgian cultural heritage in Jordan,” Samkharadze emphasized.

The delegation was led by Nikoloz Samkharadze and included David Matikashvili, Head of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with Jordan and Chairman of the Procedural Issues and Rules Committee; Irakli Kadagishvili, member of the Foreign Relations Committee and Chairman of the Regional Policy and Self-Government Committee; and Levan Makhashvili, member of the Foreign Relations Committee and Chairman of the European Integration Committee.
