Nikoloz Samkharadze, chair of the Foreign Relations Committee of the Parliament of Georgia, on Friday said discussions during a series of meetings with members of the United States Congress focused on bilateral relations, regional security and strategic transport routes.

Speaking after the meetings, Samkharadze said the main topic of discussion was the future of relations between Georgia and the United States and the prospects for moving cooperation to a new stage.

He noted the sides also discussed security challenges in the region, the issue of Russia’s occupation of Georgian territories and broader geopolitical developments.

Samkharadze noted that US lawmakers shared their assessments of the ongoing situation in Iran and developments in the wider region.

Another key topic was the development of the Middle Corridor, with members of Congress showing interest in Georgia’s role as a strategic transit hub.

The Georgian delegation also called on US lawmakers to carefully review legislative initiatives introduced by individual members of Congress that may negatively affect bilateral relations, in order to avoid undermining what Samkharadze described as a positive dynamic in Georgia-US ties.
