The chairman of Georgia’s parliamentary foreign relations committee, Nikoloz Samkharadze, has welcomed “steps taken by the Ukrainian authorities” toward restoring normal relations with Tbilisi.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Samkharadze said the Georgian government remained ready to maintain “friendly, partnership-based and strategic relations” with Ukraine.

“It is important that relations between Georgia and Ukraine return to a normal course,” he said.

Samkharadze added that Georgia had consistently supported Ukraine’s territorial integrity and independence.

“We have continuously supported Ukraine, its territorial integrity and sovereignty. At no point have we reconsidered our policy toward Ukraine,” he said.

He also said the Georgian government viewed positive recent signals from Kyiv regarding the restoration of bilateral relations.

“We welcome the steps taken by the Ukrainian authorities toward normalising relations. We are ready to have friendly, partnership-based and strategic relations with Ukraine. If the Ukrainian government is ready for this, naturally we welcome that readiness as well,” Samkharadze said.
