Nikoloz Samkharadze, Chair of the Georgian Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, on Wednesday discussed bilateral cooperation in political, trade, education, and tourism sectors with Nur Jazlan Mohamed, Deputy Speaker of Malaysia's Senate, and Wong Chen, Member of the House of Representatives.
Samkharadze thanked his Malaysian counterparts for their support of Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
“We discussed the importance of the parliamentary dimension of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, noting that it serves as a good platform for Georgia to build stronger ties with Southeast Asian countries. The meetings highlighted the dynamic development of bilateral relations and investment opportunities,” Samkharadze said.
The sides also reviewed the regional security environment. Samkharadze briefed Malaysian officials on the situation in Georgia’s Russian-occupied regions, security in the Black Sea, as well as Russia’s war against Ukraine and its impact on the South Caucasus.
The Malaysian side presented an overview of economic and political developments in Southeast Asia, particularly the negative effects of US-China trade tariffs on ASEAN countries.
Samkharadze is attending the annual session of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly during his official visit to Malaysia.
