Lomjaria urges unity during protests: public must stand together

Nino Lomjaria, founder of the public platform European Orbit of Georgia and former public defender, has called for societal unity in the face of recent unrest following the Georgian government’s decision to postpone EU accession talks until 2028.

“If society does not come out and protest, worse awaits us. Where society is scared, worse happens there – torture continues, people are also being arrested who may not have attended the rallies at all. Those who are lucky, they leave the country,” said Lomjaria, emphasizing the potential risks of inaction.

Lomjaria characterized the current situation as an effort to terrorize and intimidate the population, aiming to instill psychological fear. She warned against societal complacency, underscoring that vigilance and unity are key to countering these threats:

“There is only one cure for all this – society must be united, have one response to violence, and stand together.”

The statement comes amid widespread protests in Tbilisi, with demonstrators expressing outrage over perceived threats to Georgia’s European aspirations and democratic values.
